Community Support Programs Branch
Employment and Education Programs
The Community Support Programs (CSP) Branch maintains a tradition of support for innovative ways of enhancing employment and educational opportunities for consumers with mental illnesses.
The Federal Mental Health Action Agenda articulates specific objectives for transforming the nation’s mental health system toward the goal that all adults with serious mental illnesses can live, work, learn, and participate fully in their communities. The CSP Branch advocates for the adoption of evidenced-based employment and education programs through initiatives such as:
While there are no current grant programs around these initiatives, the now completed Employment Intervention Demonstration Program (EIDP) multisite research study remains a great source of knowledge for communities looking for innovative programs that combine vocational rehabilitation with clinical services and supports.
To increase employment among consumers with mental illnesses, the CSP Branch collaborated with the Social Security Administration and Federal partners on the State Partnership/Systems Change Initiative. It continues to work in partnership with Federal agencies to implement the objectives of the Federal Mental Health Action Agenda.
Best Practice Resources
CSP has supported the development, evaluation, and dissemination of Evidence-Based Practices Supported Employment KIT to help consumers with mental illnesses find and keep competitive jobs. The CSP Branch is funding a new Supported Education Implementation Guide. In addition, in partnership with the Department of Education’s National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation and Research (NIDRR), the CSP Branch supports two Rehabilitation Research and Training Centers (RRTCs), which conduct research, training, and dissemination projects.
