    What is National Safety Month?

National Safety Month is an annual observance that promotes safety in homes, in the workplace, in communities, and on the roads. The sponsor of National Safety Month is the National Safety Council (NSC), a nonprofit, nongovernmental, international public service organization dedicated to protecting life and to promoting health.

What is the theme for this year’s National Safety Month?

This year’s theme for National Safety Month is “Safety: Where We Live, Work, and Play” which reflects the need for injury prevention awareness in the workplace, in our homes and communities, and on our roads and highways. Each year, more than 20 million Americans suffer disabling injuries. Another 100,000 die from injuries. Nearly two-thirds of those who die are workers or their family members. NSC encourages employers to set high standards for safety within their organizations that include the safety and well-being of their employees, their employees’ families, and the communities in which their businesses operate.

As an essential component of a healthy, balanced, and productive life, good mental health is an important part of any program that promotes the safety and well-being of individuals. Mental health affects every aspect of a person’s life at home, in the workplace, and in the community. Success in all areas of life rests on a foundation of mental health. Good mental health enables individuals to cope with stress and adversity while pursuing their life goals.

What can be done to help prevent mental health problems?

There is a critical need to educate all persons, of every age, about strategies they can follow to maintain mental health. Just as each person can take steps to promote and preserve overall health, each person also can take steps to promote and strengthen mental health, regardless of age. Taking steps to avoid disease and disability, staying physically and mentally active, engaging in social activities and interpersonal relationships, and identifying new interests and sources of satisfaction are just a few of the ways to enhance mental health, and this, in turn, strengthens us physically.
