A Unique Learning Experience for Consumers of Mental Health Services

The Leadership Empowerment Advocacy Project (LEAP) in Maryland trains consumers/survivors to become leaders and advocates within the mental health system. The project was initiated by the Maryland Association of Psychiatric Support Services (MAPSS), the professional association for Maryland's psychiatric rehabilitation programs. The goal of LEAP is to expand the number of consumers/survivors able to play a prominent role within policy making bodies throughout the state. The project has also equipped consumers/survivors to make positive life changes and become more independent. For more information, please call MAPSS at (410)788-1865 or fax at (410)788-1768.

Examining the Arts and Mental Health

"Creativity is an essential ingredient of the recovery process and is often manifested in literature, music, drama, dance, poetry, and the visual arts," explains Frank Marquit, Chief Executive Officer of the National Artists for Mental Health (NAMH.) Mr. Marquit put action behind those words this fall, as he and his staff produced their first annual conference, "Healing Through Expressive Arts: an Holistic Approach to Recovery." Consumer/survivor artists and practitioners gathered in Rye Brook, N.Y. to exchange creative healing ideas, learn new skills, and participate in hands-on workshops. NAMH is an organization run primarily by consumers/survivors with a purpose to support its peers by providing programs that aid in recovery while using the creative talents of the mental health community to educate the public. For more information, contact Frank Marquit at (800) 413-4761.
