Mental Health Care Provider Education in HIV/AIDS Program IIThe Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) leads Federal efforts to treat mental illness by promoting mental health and, when possible, to prevent mental illness. CMHS HIV/AIDS programs target prevention, education, and delivery of quality mental health treatment services to people living with HIV/AIDS. Many mental health care providers lack experience in diagnosing, assessing, and addressing the mental health needs of people affected by HIV/AIDS. Others need training to feel more comfortable with providing services to people with HIV/AIDS. CMHS Mental Health Care Provider Education (MHCPE) in HIV/AIDS Program promotes training opportunities for mental health care providers who have contact with people affected by HIV/AIDS. The MHCPE II program was designed to enhance the Nation's ability to make an impact on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Training was provided for traditional mental health care providers(psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, counselors, marriage and family counselors), other first line providers of mental health services (medical students, primary care physicians), and nontraditional providers (the clergy and other spiritual providers, alternative health care workers). The program studied dissemination methods in mental health and HIV/AIDS and also assessed, via Participant Feedback forms, the quality of the training and education provided. An ethics curriculum was also introduced. Contact Information: KEN98-0059
