Pocket Guide to Mental Health ResourcesCenter for Mental Health ServicesThe U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) was created by the U.S. Congress in 1992 to bring new hope to the lives of people with mental health needs and their families. CMHS works in partnership with State and local mental health authorities, service providers, consumers, and families of consumers to improve the quality and increase the range of mental health treatment and support services for adults with serious mental illness and children with serious emotional disturbances. CMHS mental health priorities include:
CMHS established the SAMHSA's National Mental Health Information Center, (formerly known as the Knowledge Exchange Network) in September 1995 for users of mental health services and their families, policy makers, service providers, the media, and the general public. The Information Center provides quick access to reliable information on diverse aspects of mental health and mental illness via a toll-free telephone number staffed by a team of information specialists, a web site, and nearly 250 publications.
