Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health Unveiled at the White House

On Monday December 13, Surgeon General David Satcher and Health and Human Services Secretary Donna E. Shalala delivered to Mrs. Tipper Gore, the mental health advisor to the president, the first Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General.

This historic document represents nearly two and one half years of hard work by many people. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) worked with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to develop the report under the guidance of the Surgeon General. Consumer/survivor participation included three representatives on the planning board, eight contributors, and five reviewers. Mr. Larry Fricks, director, Office of Consumer Relations, Georgia Department of Mental Health, addressed the audience at the White House unveiling of the Surgeon General’s Report. He said, “critical outcomes that result from self-help, peer support and peer-run services are well documented in the Surgeon General’s Report and will emerge as essential to our recovery in the new millennium.” (See page 2 for his complete remarks.) Dr. Satcher urged Americans to call the toll-free number 1-877-9-MHEALTH or write to Mental Health, Pueblo, Col., to receive the executive summary of the report, a resource directory, fact sheets and a catalog of related materials available from federal agencies. A full copy of Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General is available on the World Wide Web at www.surgeongeneral.gov, and may be purchased from the Superintendent of Documents at the Government Printing Office, P.O. Box 371954, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15250-7954.
