Part III:
Recommendations for Future Research

  • The field would be less fragmented if researchers could come to a consensus about how to study resilience. Specifically, the field needs to address issues such as: How do we create an operational definition of resilience as (one hopes) a process? How do we study the process? How do we foster the process? How do we evaluate the process?
  • At this point, adequate research exists on the many correlates of resilience. To design effective interventions, however, we need to know more about causal processes. Therefore, research aimed at elucidating these causal processes is needed.
  • A tremendous need exists for the design and evaluation of complex, multi-faceted programs which target youth, families, schools, and communities. Not only should existing, successful, evidence-based programs be replicated in different areas and with different populations, but promising programs such as the Health Realization Program also need well-designed evaluations.
  • Program developers need to ensure that their programs are culturally competent. Not only must the definition of resilience take into account varying cultural norms and values, but interventions and evaluations of those interventions must be compatible with a community's culture.
